Many crimes are committed to obtain drugs.  These crimes affect people in all walks of like, including doctors, teachers, students, pilots, and even homemakers.  The selling, manufacturing and distribution of drugs or controlled substances, as well as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, are offenses that carry stiff penalties.  These are all violations of Federal and/or State laws.  Depending on the circumstances, the potential consequences include more probation, prison, property forfeiture, and a mandatory drug treatment program.  If you have a prior conviction, were caught with firearms in your possession, were dealing drugs near a school, you will face harsher penalties.  There are more drug arrests every year than any other offense, including assault, theft or drunk driving.
